What is CIMPLAPS?
The Center is dedicated to exploring global legal and policy issues at the intersection of freedom of journalism and digital media, including social media and artificial intelligence. The Center fulfills its mission by initiating and supporting multidisciplinary research in any methodology that expands understanding of current controversies about how news is gathered and reported through digital media and the effects of AI on freedom of journalism. The Center also educates the public, students, and other constituencies about these issues through speaker events and opportunities for students to engage with experts and relevant topics.
Technologies that have created new ways to gather and share information have also created complicated problems that the law has struggled to address in a timely way. Meanwhile, the ease with which online media cross borders means that the challenges to traditional legal principles are globalized. The Center strives to be at the forefront of examining these issues. The Center believes that access to fact-based information is essential to democracy and must be safeguarded.
